[LCC] low band antenna experience

My point was simple too.  "The reviews state.." describes the use of K3s by
a majority of participants in the WRTC2010 competition.  The rest of the
story is that 3 of the 5 top WRTC2010 teams used FT-1000MPs.

My point to Mark using Icom 756 Pro II's was simple.  Your antenna system
only gets you so far. Admittedly a long way. The Elecraft K3 is a great
radio for pulling out weak signals or signals that are near the noise level
or close in working with crowded bands during contests.  You need a great
receiver to do that and the K3 has one of the best.

There was a lot of excitement on the Elecraft email reflector over the fact
that the majority of participants in the World Radio Team Championship 2010
(WRTC 2010) were using Elecraft K3s. There was even more glee when it was
discovered that Scott Robbins W4PA, former Ten-Tec product manager, and Tim
Duffy K3LR of Team Icom had taken K3s. This was like the President of Coca
Cola serving Pepsi at his anniversary party!

out <http://www.wrtc2010.ru/result_table.php> , which show that the top two
teams, from Russia and Estonia respectively, were using FT-1000MPs. The USA
team of N6MJ and KL9A in third place used K3s, as did K5ZD and W2SC who came
fifth, but the fourth placed S50A and S57AW again used FT-1000MPs as did the
Lithuanian entry in seventh place.

So let's get this straight: the winning stations and several others in the
top ten used a now obsolete radio that was introduced in 1996 which has
frequently been criticized as inferior to the K3? I suspect the fact that
many international competitors took K3s may have more to do with the fact
that the Elecraft radio is small enough and light enough to be taken on an
aircraft as hand baggage. And I suspect that the reason for the success of
the stations using FT-1000MPs is that there is more to winning a contest
than having a receiver with the best performance numbers.

Anyone want to swap an Elecraft K3 for an FT-1000MP? (Only joking.)

Maybe you could gain by the use of Elecraft K3's....

There is no transceiver in the amateur marketplace that has the close-in
dynamic range performance of the K3 with narrow roofing filters installed,
and most aren't close to the K3.

Also noted was.

Radios used at last weeks WRTC2010 competition:

Team" for Icom (complete with "Team ICOM" uniforms), and who 
apears in advertisements touting the superior performance of 
the Icom 7XXX line of transceivers, brought with him for his 
personal use... 

...An Elecraft K3! 

That's like Dale Earnhardt bringing a Toyota Camry to drive 
in the Daytona 500!   

The list is sort of like discovering that Bill Gates uses 
an Apple Mac Book running OS/X to do Microsoft presentations 
with! 

Now, we all know that the invitees to this party could 
afford to bring *anything* they wanted to bring.  Im also 
sure that any rig manufacturer would have been happy to 
supply them with anything they wanted, just for the 
asking... 

But they both showed up with K3's.  So did most of the 
competitors!   

Why?"....
